THE financial injection by the Eastern Cape government which has kept boxing in the province alive will punch in again this weekend when two promoters stage another leg of the provincial titles in East London and Port Elizabeth. While other provinces across the country are experiencing boxing inactivity since SABC pulled the plug on screening tournaments owing to the ongoing court case, the Eastern Cape has enjoyed boxing activity thanks to the provincial department of sports, arts and culture’s continued support of the sport. Besides supporting local promoters when staging big tournaments, the department has also injected R1.2-million towards the staging of provincial titles in every financial year.
On the same day, in Port Elizabeth the oldest female boxing promoter in the country, Gladys Tsenene, will also stage her own tournament. With each promoter getting a sizeable amount to stage each tournament, so many boxers from the province are enjoying activity, which has translated into their dominance of national title fights....
