Meyer takes Etzebeth gamble
SPRINGBOK coach Heyneke Meyer named lock Eben Etzebeth in the starting lineup to face Australia at the Suncorp Stadium in Brisbane on Saturday. But his body language suggested it was unlikely that the enforcer would play. Etzebeth has been struggling with a chest infection and is in a race against time to be fit for the Rugby Championship encounter.
“If he isn’t cleared then Juandre Kruger will start with Marcell Coetzee coming on to the bench. In all there were three personnel changes to the squad from the team that beat Argentina 22-17 in Mendoza two weeks ago.
Zane Kirchner returns to fullback for the first time this season with Willie le Roux moving to the wing and Bjorn Basson dropping out of the matchday squad. Hooker Bismarck du Plessis replaces Adriaan Strauss in the front row and Van der Merwe takes over from Kruger at lock.
“Bjorn is not 100% fit, and we know it’s going to be a tough, quick game. You don’t want to go into such an important game with guys who aren’t fully fit,” said Meyer.
