New imbizo tackles toll of going to mountain
THE Eastern Cape House of Traditional Leaders (ECHTL), in partnership with the departments of local government and traditional affairs and the health department, has spearheaded awareness campaign meetings in three initiation hot-spot areas, Alfred Nzo, OR Tambo and Chris Hani district municipalities. In the 2012 winter season 47 initiates died, prompting ECHTL to call for Premier Noxolo Kiviet and President Jacob Zuma to declare it a disaster. In the 2012 summer season the death toll in the Eastern Cape dropped significantly.
In June 2009, 61 initiates died. It is estimated that more that 500 initiates have died in the Eastern Cape in the past 10 years.
In addition a high number of initiates have had to undergo penile amputations. Most of the problem areas are in Mpondoland where large numbers of boys undergo the rite during the winter season.
