But if he fails in 2013 - by fair means or foul - to win Zimbabwe's top job, even his closest supporters may believe he will have been outmanoeuvred by Mugabe one too many times. Born to a large family in grinding poverty in the eastern district of Buhera, he had to quit school early and earn a living so as to enable his younger siblings to get an education.
Such actions pushed the teetotal, non-smoking Tsvangirai to political prominence. His bodyguard has been killed and his wife died in a suspicious car crash that also landed him in hospital.
